Education
This project is a start in a new era for RDA, as a key development in strengthening the benefits of RDA. From the success that this project (in its pilot year) has already brought, we hope that we shall be able to build on this to develop a versatile and adaptable Education programme.
September 2005 saw the launch of an exciting new initiative in which RDA has joined in partnership with the awarding body ASDAN. Across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, thirteen Regional Educational Co-ordinators have been appointed to encourage the organisation’s work with schools. These Co-ordinators have received the same professional training as teachers to deliver the ‘Transition Challenge’ programme for 14-16 year olds with learning difficulties, in conjunction with local schools.
This ASDAN programme takes a thematic approach to learning, through areas such as ‘Personal Development’ and ‘Independent Living Skills’. Within these themes, students are covering subjects of the National Curriculum, from Citizenship to Science. By taking innovative planning approaches, the teaching can be delivered through RDA lessons in Riding and ‘Horse Knowledge and Care’. Most riders will achieve a nationally-recognised ASDAN award at the end of the one-year course.
This Education initiative has benefits beyond celebrating the success of young riders. Already trained to a professional teaching standard recognised in the ‘horse world’, RDA volunteer instructors on the pilot project have been trained and supported by ASDAN in the planning, assessing and recording of progress within an educational programme.
